Keith Haring (1958-90) was one of the most renowned young artists whose work capitalized on the urban street culture of the 1980s. Inspired by the graffiti artists who covered New York’s subway cars, Haring began drawing white chalk on the black paper used to cover blank advertising panels. The metro, as Haring said, became a “laboratory” for working out his ideas. Before his death, Haring established a foundation in his name to preserve and enhance his legacy of giving to children’s and AIDS organizations. Keith Haring died of AIDS at the age of 30 in New York in February 1990
