Pimp your bike with Spray.Bike

Are you tired of your old bike? Then try painting your bike with Spray.Bike paint. Make your bike exactly what you want it to be; it can't get more personal and unique than this! This way, everyone will know that your bike truly belongs to you and matches your personality completely. Make your pimped-out bike as inexpensive or as extravagant as you want! If you don't have an old model lying around, you can always buy a second-hand bike on Marktplaats for a low price. In addition to painting your bike frame, you can even mount unique bike accessories such as a bike basket, bike saddle, bike lock, bike lights, chain guard, pedals, bike mirror, or other bike accessories. The options are endless! In this blog, you can read about how Huub Kappert painted his old bike with a unique design inspired by the famous paintings of Piet Mondrian.

Firstly, you'll need an old bike and spray paint. You probably already have a rusty bike sitting in the shed, but if not, you can always get a cheap second-hand one. The paint used here is from the Spray.Bike Historic Collection and the Spray.Bike BLB London Collection.

Step 1. Strip the bike down as much as possible

It's easiest to work on your bike when it's stripped down. Remove the wheels, handlebars, saddle, bottom bracket, fenders, etc. If you can't remove some parts, try to tape off as much as possible. Cleaning your bike is also crucial; make sure there's no mud, sand, or other dirt on it.

Step 2. Remove rust

Remove any rust from the frame if necessary. You can use a wire brush for this. An electric one is used here, but manual works as well.

Step 3. Sanding

Sanding the frame is very important. The quality of your sanding will greatly affect the final result. Start with coarse-grit sandpaper to remove any remaining rust and damaged areas. Coarse sandpaper will leave scratches on the frame, so follow up with fine-grit sandpaper to smooth it out. The frame should feel completely smooth before moving on.

Step 4. Cleaning

Thoroughly clean the frame with degreaser like white spirit. Apply it with a clean cloth or sponge. It's crucial to keep the frame grease-free, so avoid touching it with your hands and use a cloth instead.

Step 5. Masking

Mask off areas that you don't want to paint with tape.

Step 6. First coat of paint

Now you can spray on the first coat of paint. Here, black paint from Spray.Bike is used. This will eventually form the black lines on a white background. Make sure you're outdoors or in a well-ventilated area. Optionally, you can wear a face mask.

Step 7. Masking the design

Mask off the design you want to create on your bike with tape. In this case, it's the lines and squares that need to remain black.

Step 8. Second coat of paint

Now you can apply the second coat of paint. Here, white paint from Spray.Bike is used.

Step 9. Painting details

Now paint the details with a brush. Here, the squares are filled in with primary colors from Spray.Bike paint, to achieve the Mondrian effect.

Step 10. Remove the tape

Remove the tape to reveal your design.

Step 11. The wheels

Usually, the wheels don't need to be painted along with the frame, but in this case they do. Repeat the same steps as for the frame.

Step 12. Reassemble your bike

Reassemble your bike and voila! Behold the beautiful result of your pimped-out bike!
