Frequently asked questions
Clogging an aerosol can have 2 causes. Below are the causes with solutions.
1. The cap (nozzle) is clogged due to frequent use.
Solution: To make the cap usable again, soak it in a container with white spirit for at least 24 hours. After this, you can use a needle to clear the entrances and inject it with air. A quicker and easier option is to make sure you have a supply of caps. A fresh cap works wonders! Finally, you can use the MTN pro solvent cap cleaner, this aerosol is designed to unblock caps.
Prevention: By using a cap frequently, the passageway of the nozzle slowly slips shut because of the dried paint in the cap. To prevent this, after each use, it is recommended to hold the spray can upside down and spray the cap clean with air only.

2. The straw inside the aerosol can is clogged with pigment powder.
The fact that the straw is clogged may be because it was not shaken properly, or because the aerosol can was used in cold temperatures. In either case, the pigment (powder) has not been mixed with the solvent.
Solution: First, shake the aerosol can well for 2 minutes and then put a new cap on it with a wide jet, such as the Astro fatcap or Pink dot fat cap. Press the cap as hard as possible while making a circular motion. Once the straw is free, hold the aerosol upside down again to then spray the straw clean with air.
Prevention: You can prevent clogging by always shaking the spray can well before use and using and storing it in a place where it is not too cold.
Posca, Molotow, Pintor, KRINK, QBIX and Kreul paint pens work with a pump system. To get the paint out of the pen, shake it well and pump for 1-2 minutes on a test surface. After +/- 30 sec, the tip will slowly fill up with paint. This is only necessary for new pens or if the pen needs to be replaced. The tip may also have dried out because the cap was not on properly. For children, we recommend the water-based spray cans. Because this paint is water-based, it is odorless. There are also spray cans available that are slightly smaller in size (100 ml) which makes children can easily work with it. There are also fun workshop packages available, for example.
The best primer for aluminum, zinc and other complicated metals is MTN Pro Wash Primer. Apply 1-2 coats of Primer and within 20-30 minutes apply MTN94 or MTN Hardcore2. In fact, it is best to do this while the primer is still 'wet'. After an hour, the paint starts some chemical processes and if you then apply a new layer of paint or varnish, it may damage it.
You can definitely use MTN94, MTN Hardcore2 and MTN Water Based spray paint on textiles. Note: it is obviously not a true textile paint and can therefore fade over time and washings.
Still not completely satisfied with the result of your artwork or project? No worries, you can remove the paint with MTN Pro Paint Stripper or Solvent. This causes the paint layer to dissolve, after which you can easily remove the residue with, for example, a paint scraper.
A primer can improve paint adhesion or protect the substrate. A primer is not always necessary, but it is recommended in the following cases. If you are working on a bare surface that is made of metal, carbon, plastic or foam, we recommend pre-treating it with a primer. This way, the color picks up better and adheres well so that your desired paint layer remains in place. If you want to give your work extra protection and make it scratch-resistant, we recommend finishing it with a varnish or lacquer layer.
With a varnish, your project or work of art is better protected against external influences. In addition, varnish ensures that your colors stand out better and are not discolored by UV light.
It is advisable to use varnish of the same brand as your surface. Each brand contains a different chemical composition, which can cause an unexpected chemical reaction. Of course, you want to avoid that. Depending on the base of your varnish, the following rules of thumb apply:
Water-based and acrylic-based varnishes can be used on almost all substrates, including synthetic ones. The other way around often doesn't work. So a synthetic varnish over a water-based paint layer is not recommended. Check our range of lacquers and varnishes here.
The rule of thumb is: a 400ml aerosol can will cover about 2m2. With a 300ml spray can, that's about 1.5m2 and with 100ml, you cover about 0.5m2. And remember, you'd rather have too much paint than too little.
