Tie Dye, how does it work?

There are many tie-dye techniques explained that show you how to get started like a pro, but sometimes you just want to learn the basics! In this post, we explain the basics of tie-dye in simple instructions, whether you want to learn how to make a tie-dye shirt, dye socks, or any other fabric item!
What you'll need:
With us, you'll find Tie Dye sets that include everything you need — except the fabric! We recommend 100% natural fibers like cotton, rayon, or silk for the best color results. Synthetic fabrics like polyester may not absorb the dye well or at all.
Step 1:
Before you begin tie dyeing, wash the fabric item to remove sizing. Then, take your damp fabric straight from the washing machine and prepare it for dyeing.
Step 2:
Fold, twist, and bind your fabric according to your chosen tie-dye technique.
Step 3:
Once your fabric is secured, it's time to mix your Tie Dye colors! Mix the powder with water, in squeeze bottles or a bucket. Make sure the dye is well mixed before moving to step 4.
Step 4:
Squeeze the dye bottle or use a syringe to apply dye to various parts of your bound fabric. You may need to twist and/or flip your fabric while applying dye to ensure coverage of all sections.
Step 5:
Cover your batiked fabric in plastic to keep it moist while the dye sets. Let it sit for 6 to 8 hours or longer for the brightest colors. Follow the tie-dye instructions on the packaging for washing instructions.
